Abstract : The general theory of the scattering of excitations in solids by localized imperfections is discussed. The solid state analog of the usual partial wave expansion of the scattering amplitude is derived. In an appendix, the applicability of the general theory to phonons and spin waves as well as electrons is discussed. (Author)
