Abstract : Three categories of energy-material interactions are discussed; Embrittlement, oxidation and high power density effects. (1) The reversibility of embrittlement by a liquid metal is demonstrated in a model experiment and is applied to an embrittlement machining experiment; (2) local oxidation at room temperature is demonstrated and applied in a combustion machining experiment; (3) high power density effects are investigated by means of laser beams and the mechanism of material removal is described.
