Abstract : This report outlines the evolution of cast 356-T6 type aluminum alloys. The early work suggested that a reduction of the iron contamination, or an increase in properly precipitated magnesium silicide should result in stronger more ductile alloys. A preliminary series of aluminum alloys with constant magnesium and varying silicon and iron contents were cast into MIT chill Plates, heat treated and tensile tested. This exploratory test work partially confirmed the hypothesis that elongation might be improved with decrease in iron impurity. (Author)
