Abstract : Microglia in the hypothalamus and thalamus of mice infected with the JBE virus have been observed in the electron microscope. The microglia have been revealed to have dense particles with an averaging diameter of 375 A in the nuclei and cytoplasm when the paralysis has occurred in the mouse inoculated intracebrally with the JBE agent. In view of the fact that the particles have a distinctive morphology and have never been encountered in uninfected cells and in the cells at the early stage of the infection, they are believed to be JBE viral particles. The viral particles arrayed in a crystalline form show the fine dot or thread-like elements as their nucleoid structure. Development of the virus particles occurs in the nucleus rather than the cytoplasm of infected cells. A possible relationship between dense particles appearing within the nuclei and viral particles has been discussed. (Author)
