Abstract : One of the most versatile methods for generation of concentration gradients for column chromatography is that employed in the gradient mixers of Peterson. These mixers consist of a number of fixed chambers connected in series and equipped with stirrers; as solution flows from the outlet, a gradient is generated which, depending on the initial concentrations of the solutions in the chambers, can be of many forms. These mixers are quite difficult to construct; moreover, for some purposes, particularly analytical chromatography, mixers with chambers of fixed sizes and in fixed numbers are inconvenient. This report describes a mixer which is comparatively easy to construct and rearrange.
