Abstract : Heat transfer in a system consisting of a fluid flowing over a melting plate composed of the same material as the fluid was investigated. The test model is similar to the heat transfer phenomenon occurring when an iceberg drifts in warm sea water. The flow of a liquid, initially at a uniform temperature, over a flat plate composed of the solid phase of the flowing liquid at constant temperature was assumed. For simplification of subsequent analysis the flow was stipulated as the Leveque type. The temperature distribution in the flowing fluid is determined; melting at the interface is shown to result in a decrease in the Nusselt number; consideration is given to the practical application of the results; and a simple numerical calculation of the melting rate of ice is given.
