Abstract : For any stable linear system, an explicit formula is derived for the input waveform p(t) which maximizes the output waveform amplitude at a prescribed time instant. The problem and the results are closely related to the matched filter problem of radar theory and the bang-bang problem of optimal control theory. In addition to the obvious direct applications in signal design, the results can also be used indirectly since they provide a standard of performance for more realistic situations where additional constraints are important.
