Abstract : The derivation of a mathematical model is presented for use in the determination of probability of visual detection of low-flying aircraft. The result is the factor P(D/L), probability of visual detection given line of sight, which can be used in the general investigation of survivability of surveillance aircraft against visually aimed weapons. The mathematical formulation of the situation is based on geometrical concepts of a two- dimensional field, the known characteristics of the human eye, and an assumed technique of scanning by an observer. To determine the probability of visual detection in a given situation, a Monte Carlo approach, utilizing a digital computer, is proposed.
