Abstract : This paper describes the integrated fieldexperimentation-mathematical-model-building approach employed by RAC's Combat Developments Division to study a wide range of combat problems requiring quick response. The integrated approach is illustrated by discussion of a computer model used to measure the vulnerability of tank formations to aerial attack. In measuring the vulnerability of any given formation, the computer model considers such factors as (a) formation type, (b) distance between vehicles, (c) firer's range and angle (direction) of attack, (d) ballistic characteristics of the weapon fired, and (e) the attacker's firing strategy.
