Abstract : Every object in the universe, whose temperature is above absolute zero, emits infrared radiation. The fact that this radiation can be refracted, reflected, and diffracted like visible light has given rise to a technology known as infrared technology. The purpose of this discussion is to present some of the basic elements of this technology, especially those elements that are affected by the earth's atmosphere. The discussion follows this sequence: infrared physics, maximum emissions, IR detectors, atmospheric effects, missile defense systems, attitude control, and meteorological satellites. (Author)
