Abstract : This report describes work on an investigation of methods, techniques, and devices by which the temperature of a quartz crystal can be maintained, with a minimum of power, at a nominal operating temperature over environmental temperature ex tremes. The work includes investigations of second-order effects applicable to the design of low-power crystal ovens. End products resulting from the study are three types of ovens: (1) a 3 cubic inch, 500 milliwatt oven (Type J6) requiring accessibility to the crystal and operating at +75 =1 C over a -55 to +60 C ambient; (2) a 3 cubic inch, reduced power, sealed oven (Type K6G) with similar operating requirements; and (3) a 4 cubic inch, 250 milliwatt oven (Type L6) requiring accessibility to a chamber capable of housing two crystals and operating at 0 to =1 C over a -55 to 0 C ambient.
