Abstract : Several methods of producing polycrystalline boron specimens were evaluated, and zone-sintering, hot pressing, and melting were selected for use in this project. Sawing, polishing, and etching techniques were developed for the preparation of boron for mechanical testing and for microscopic examination. Cast boron was prepared and tested and was found to be extremely sensitive to surface condition. Fracture was found to be partly intergranular and partly transgranular. (Author)
