Abstract : This report presents a survey of some aspects of the kinetic theory of rarefied gases (neutral molecules) and a brief introduction to the characteristics of emsembles of identical charged particles. Consideration is given to the deriva tion and properties of the Boltzmann equation. The special from of the Boltzmann equation for free molecule flow and associated boundary conditions governing the distribution function are discussed. The subject of near-free-molecule flow is introduced by a consideration of molecular beams and the effect of collisions on beam strength. A review of moleclar beam systems from the point of view of design is included. Finally the Boltzmann equation has been reconsidered in detail for the more general case of an ensemble of identical charged particles. Relativistic effects are included. This brief account is terminated by a consideration of the distribution function for particles under the action of external forces. (Author)
