Abstract : In seismic discrimination problems one is interested in filtering out information carried in certain waves from noise carried in other waves. With the use of arrays of sensors, this filtering can be performed in space and time. It is quite useful to visualize the filtering in the Fourierconjugate space of wave number and frequency, and this point of view is developed. Most of the report is devoted to an expression of the pertinent facts about the propagation of elastic waves in the earth in terms of the frequency-wave number diagram. The remainder concerns signal and noise models and the interpretation of filtering techniques in frequency-wave number space.
