Abstract : In the course of the past year, survey work continued to demonstrate gross crystallochemical defects of various sorts. Most of the work was confined to fluoride compositions, though one chalcogenide system was studied. A great deal of routine reaction work was undertaken to delineate the time-temperature composition parameters for preparation of the various compositions. In all cases the goal was to prepare homogeneous, monophasic compositions over the maximum ranges of solid solution. The reproducible preparation of these compositions required the investigation of several sources of raw materials and repeated syntheses by various chemical techniques. After the successful demonstration of several highly defective crystallochemical systems, efforts were begun to hot-press at least the end member compounds in some of these systems. Most of these experiments were on CaF2 and KMgF3. Lack of control over the ambient atmosphere resulted in excessive thermal hydrolysis or oxydation of the fluorides at elevated temperatures.
