Abstract : Various systems and techniques for encapsulation of irradiation experiments have been devised in the course of several years of research using several AEC test reactor facilities. A capsule design philosophy has evolved which is based upon the use of two types of capsules, sealed units and externally controlled units for the irradiation of large numbers of metallurgical specimens under a range of thermal and nuclear conditions. The basic philosophy of capsule design is described along with specific techniques utilized for various test reactor capsules and for long-term power reactor surveillance capsules. (Author)
