Abstract : Preliminary observations and calibration of a moderately sensitive protopype field unit, designed and constructed under this contract, for measuring gamma emitting radioisotopes in humans showed the instrument suitable for rapid scanning of large numbers of individuals. It is transportable in one Jeep and detects the presence of most gamma emitting radioisotopes well below maximum permissible body burdens. A modification of the quadrupod counter was employed in searching for chelating agents to increase excretion of intra peritoneally injected Cs137. Whole body potassium measurements in humans using a large single crystal low level whole body human gamma ray spectrometer were obtained by multiplying the count rate at the K40 peak by a calibration factor.
