Abstract : Two devices for image conversion and intensifica tion were proposed by Electro-Optical Systems, Inc., and investigated under this contract: (1) The beam sandwich tube, a vacuum device where the voltage drop across a photoconductor determines the energy of electrons bombarding a cathodoluminescent phosphor; (2) The ferroelectric image panel, a solid state device where the voltage drop across a photoconductor is applied to a ferroelectric capacitor which controls the voltage applied to an electroluminescent phosphor. The investigation included experimental and analytical work on photoconductors and ferroelectrics as well as a thorough analysis of the proposed image intensifiers. The analysis was used to predict the performance limits of these devices. New circuits were developed for the ferroelectric image panels especially suited to the panel geometry, and single element versions of these circuits were cuilt and tested. (Author)
