Abstract : Detailed studies have been carried out with four strains of chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum. The strain from Colombia, South America is resistant to chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, amodiaquin, and 377C54, and is sensitive to pyri methamine and quinine. The three strains from Southeast Asia are resistant to chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, amodiaquin, atabrine, chlorguanide, and 377C54; these three strains vary in their response to pyrimethamine and quinine. Studies have also been carried out on (1) the activities of hexokinase and glyceraldehyde-3phosphate dehydrogenase during primaquine-induced hemolysis and (2) the relationship between the activities of these two enzymes and the age of the human red cell.
