Abstract : One hundred and five male Ss between the ages of 13 and 15 performed five trials of twenty shots each on a rifle task, answering two LA questions before each trial. Two questions which permitted defensive answers followed the last trial. The hypothesis that fear of failure Ss, as measured by the Hostile Press system, would be more defensive than others was confirmed, as were hypotheses that Ss low in need achievement and high in need affiliation would be more defensive and higher on Hostile Press than would those high on need achievement and low on need affiliation. It was concluded that the data also support the theory that fear of failure individuals may fear the social consequences of failure rather than failure itself. (Author)
