Abstract : A number of properties were investigated of water-soluble derivatives of chlorophylls a and b and pheophytins a and b obtained by alkali hydrolysis of the initial pigments. The absorption spectra of the compounds were measured in methanol, ethanol, and buffer solutions with pH values of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11; the fluorescence spectra were measured in methanol and a phosphate buffer of pH 7. The photoreduction of water-soluble chlorophyll analogs was demonstrated by adding both dissolved atmospheric oxygen and ascorbic acid in the presence of pyridine. (Author)
