Abstract : Experimental work was concerned entirely with the growth of ruby crystals from solution in fused lithium fluoride-aluminum fluoride, employing the thermal-gradient method. The feasibility of growing crystals in the solvent was previously demonstrated (Third Semiannual Technical Summary Report, June 30, 1963); hence, in this period primary emphasis was placed on the growth of larger crystals of a size and prefection suitable for use in optical masers. In seeking to obtain the necessary control over the crystal-growth process, important variables such as temperature, temperature gradients, solvent composition, solute concentration, degree of agitation of the solution, and system geometry were investigated.
