Abstract : The theoretical framework necessary to explain the modulation of an infrared beam by photoninduced free-charge carriers is briefly reviewed. An experiment is described which demonstrates that variations in the density of free-charge carriers in germanium can modulate the intensity of an infrared beam transmitted by the germanium.
