Abstract : An experimental investigation was conducted to determine if an unstarted ejector-diffuser could be used to establish simulated altitude conditions during the testing of a variable area ratio, annular nozzle. Diffusers of various geometries were tested, and comparisons of their unstarted pumping characteristics were made. The results demonstrate that cell pressure can be more easily controlled with a large diffuser than with a smaller one; however, exact control of diffuser exhaust pressure during testing will be necessary if a precise cell pressure is to be maintained. The effect of the unstarted diffuser on nozzle performance was also investigated, and the nozzle performance was found to be significantly affected by diffusers with an area ratio equal to or less than 231/1.
