Abstract : A number of selected compounds and alloys of the rare-earth elements, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Yb in combination with the elements of Chemical Groups V and VI, As, Sb, Se, and Te were prepared and their (electrical) properties studied. Data on crystal structures indicated that, typically in the M-Se and M-Te systems, four types of crystalline phases exist: the MX, MX(2), and MX(4) compounds, and a single phase spanning the M(3)X(4)-M(2)X(3) composition range. Electrical characteristics of these refractory materials were found to range from those of high-resistivity semiconductors to those of metallike conductors. Analyses are made of electrical conduction in the NdSe-SmSe alloy system and of the type of chemical bonding prevailing in M(3)X(4)-M(2)X(3) selenide and telluride phases. (Author)
