Abstract : Conditions for and properties of the invariance are considered of an integral which represents a global measure of uniformity of a class of steady-state viscous incompressible flows. This integral is related to the forces which account for the inherent non-linear structure of the Navier-Stokes equations. The condition of global constraint on flow fields rendered by its properties of invariance is therefore tantamount to a condition on the non-linear structure of the classical equations of hydrodynamics.
