Abstract : Results of research and development work on pressure-expanded metal fabric structures for aerospace applications are reported and discussed. This work includes methods of structural analysis, experimental investigation of the stress-strain characteristics and other mechanical properties of metal fabrics and AIRMAT, and development of fabrication techniques (spotwelding, AIRMAT weaving and coating). A series of tests was conducted on metal fabric cylinders and AIRMAT beams and panels for exploration of their structural response (deflections, wrinkling and collapse, structural failure, creep, hysteresis, fatigue, and behavior at elevated temperature). Test data are correlated to theoretical results where applicable. (Author)
