Abstract : An East African common market, composed of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika, has been in existence since 1922. An attempt is made to (1) assess the gains and losses resulting from the operation of this common market, both from the point of view of East Africa as a whole and that of the three participant economies individually; (2) consider the gains likely to result from continuation of the common market, in either its present or an expanded form; and (3) evaluate several measures that might improve the performance of the common market and suggest a course of action the East African governments might follow.
