Abstract : The following research programme was performed. An experimental investigation of the behaviour of a microwave horn antenna in the presence of a plasma sheath generated in helium, was conducted at a frequency of 9.7Gc (x- band). A comprehensive series of investigations designed to test the validity of various theoretical treatments of plasma properties and to assess the accuracy of various microwave systems for determining the properties of plasmas which are finite in extent using free-space microwave techniques were performed. Theoretical results were obtained for prediction of plasma effects such as plasma boundaries, refractive defocussing, non-uniformity of plasma and diffraction due to finite size of the plasma. Preliminary considerations were given to the investigation of antenna properties in the presence of a plasma sheath which is anisotropic due to the presence of a static magnetic field. A magnetic field apparatus suitable for such investigations and capable of generating magnetic field strengths in excess of 4500 gauss with a working diameter of 7 in. was assembled and tested.
