Abstract : The average kinetic energy per unit volume required to produce breakup of a diverging, hollow conical liquid jet is measured as a function of viscosity, surface tension, and density of the liquid. An empirical equation relating the energy, called the critical energy, with the liquid properties is formulated. The critical energy is also measured as a function of nozzle design features using water as the liquid. A model is presented to explain the empirical relationship between critical energy and liquid properties. This model for the energetics involved in the breakup of the hollow conical jet is tentative. Some of the assumptions of energy partitioning used in formulating the model are being investigated as part of a continuing study in conical jet breakup.
