Abstract : Tests were conducted to determine the size at which different-shaped symbols of the same color appeared equivalent. Subjects included sixth-, ninth-, and eleventh-grade students, cartographic university students, and advanced design students. A preliminary evaluation indicating little difference in the response of sixth graders and design students suggested the existence of basic rules of viewing the shapes. Further studies with spot, line, word, and over-all pattern symbols are planned to determine specifications for selection according to size, color, and shape.
