Abstract : The kinetics of the basic hydrolysis of methyl propionate in acetone- water media was studied a 25.00 deg and 35.03 deg C. The ionic strength was held constant at 0.0200 for all runs. The effect of the dielectric constant of the medium on reaction rate was interpreted according to an equation developed by Amis (J. Chem. Ed. 30:351, 1953). The energies of activation and logarithms of the Arrhenius frequency factor for the various reaction media were calculated and discussed.
