Abstract : A method of physically developing Ilford G5 unloaded nuclear emulsion plates with an emulsion thickness of 200 micro is described, and formulas are given which specify the processing time and the optimum concentrations of the various components of the developer. A comparison of this method with the conventional chemical procedure indicated that physical development possessed the advantage of producing a track almost twice the width of that obtained with chemical development. Moderate physical development of thick nuclear emulsions without risking nonuniformity of development was difficult because of the long processing period required for development as compared to the short period required for chemical development.
