Abstract : Thermal decomposition of MeNO2: The effect of additives such as NO, HCN, and CO2 on the rate of thermal decomposition of MeNO2 at relatively high pressures was investigated as well as their affect on the qualitative and quantitative distribution of the reaction products. CO2 did not affect the rate of reaction. Either the large additional amount of HCN or the presence of new compounds formed by the reaction of HCN with MeNO2 or its decomposition products had a pronounced effect on the polarographic behavior of MeNO2. The concentration of Me was greatly decreased by the addition of 20% NO. The relative concentrations of N and CO increased over those in samples to which no NO was added; a decrease in CO2 was noted. A great increase was noted in the peak heights of unidentified materials which had previously been noted in trace amounts. Mechanism: The free-radical and molecular mechanisms of the thermal decomposition of nitromethane was considered. Rocket propellants: The preparation of N-aminoethylenimine by the dehydration of ethanolhydrazine was attempted as well as the preparation of N, N, N'-trimethyltriazane.
