Abstract : A method is described for approximately determining the response of a nonlinear system to a wide variety of inputs. The method is applicable to systems with one essential nonlinearity whose mathematical relations are expressible by a standard type of block diagram, and in which the nonlinearity changes in a prescribed manner with time or depends on an independent signal, such as a grid voltage of a vacuum tube. The techniques which are involved include operational mathematics, numerical integration, and the graphical solution of algebraic equations. Examples of the method are included for a series-resonant circuit with a nonlinear inductor, an RC ladder network containing a diode, a torque-saturated servomechanism, and an RC network containing a diode. The accuracy which was considered adequate for engineering purposes is discussed.
