Abstract : A brief discussion is given concerning the advances in techniques of measurement, including the determination of the half-life of radionuclides, determination of the rate of disintegration, decay schemes, spectrometry and mass absorption coefficients. The status of the available standards (C14, Co60, I131, P32, Ra226, Pb210 (Rad D), and Bi210 (Rad E) is presented. The information concerns the methods of production, chemistry involved, half-life, decay scheme, intercomparison of activity between different laboratories, and the availability of standard samples. The desirable standards, Au198, Fe55, Fe59, Na24, and H3, are discussed in terms of methods of production, chemistry involved, half-life, decay scheme, and intercomparison of activity. The desirable standards, for which little nuclear information is available, are also mentioned; these are Cr51, Sr90, Tl204, and Zn65.
