Abstract : Tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of firing rounds designed for an M27 rifle in a T137E3 rifle; the tests indicated that the 13,700 psi resulting from an 8-lb charge of PA-30240 propellant would make the arrangement unsafe. A comparison indicated that projectile weight does not affect the relationship between measurements by M3 copper and external piezoelectric gages in the 10,000- to 13,000-psi range. Twenty rounds of T138E57 ammunition were fired with a 25-rps spin (1-200 tube) at a 5983-ft range. The probability errors (PE) for hits were + or - 0.74 mil vertical and + or - 0.65 mil horizontal. At 45 rps (1-120 tube) on a 2044-yd range, 19 rounds gave PE's of + or - 0.54 mil vertical and + or - 0.46 horizontal. T119E8 projectiles fired at the same range from a 105-in. smooth-bore tube gave a PE of + or - 0.50 mil vertical and + or - 0.34 mil horizontal. The same projectiles fired from a 1-20 rifled tube dispersed vertically + or - 0.44 mil and horizontally + or - 0.47 mil. A 4-in. reduction in penetration was caused by jet interference in the DRC314 tee. About 2 in. of the reduction was lost in the boom and 2 in. in the entry hole. About 1 in. could be recovered by enlarging the entry hole. Investigations are described briefly which are in progress on super-quick-delay mechanical fuses, nose-element crystal assemblies, and DRD328 base elements. (See also AD16753)
