Abstract : A significant reduction in total protein, albumin, and gamma globulin occurred in rat serum 2 and 3 days after a 22-min exposure to whole-body 880-r irradiation; sigma and Beta globulins were increased. The azorubin-binding capacity (ABC) of serum albumin was not affected by the exposure to irradiation, by an 18-day exposure to 4 deg C, or by acidosis produced by a 5 M NH4Cl solution administered by stomach tube in doses of 2 and 3 mM/100 g of body weight. The alterations in the N metabolism were similar to those of animals subjected to tourniquet shock or CCl4 treatment, but were not necessarily directly connected with differences in ABC.
