Abstract : An investigation was made to establish a correlation between the effects of configuration and material on the static properties of cores. An equation was derived for the effect of core configuration with the assumptions that the dipole axis of every magnetic element in the material is perfectly aligned with the rolling direction of a strip and that every dipole is oriented either parallel or antiparallel with the rolling direction. The validity of the equation was checked by tests on 10 cores constructed from 0.004-in. x 0.5-in. Orthonol strips wound into toroids. In every case the measured permeability was less than the value predicted on the basis of the core dimentsions. The equation derived for the effect of core material was based on the assumptions that a small flat section of magnetic material contains dipoles which reorient themselves according to a normal probability curve with respect to increasing field intensity, and that there are no stable states other than parallel and antiparallel alignment. The experimental results did not confirm this equation, but indicated that the slope of the hysteresis loop depends primarily on the radial dimensions of the core, rather than on the core material.
