Abstract : The bombs were loaded with 80/20 tritonal and assembled with athwartships fuzes have a 96-g tetryl booster. The failures which occurred with 3 of the 5 rounds were attributed to a 0.25-in. air gasp separating the tetryl lead-in from the blasting cap components of the fuze. An average beam-spray fragment velocity of 5630 fps and a peak blast pressure of 8.4 psi at 50 ft were produced by the 2 bombs that detonated high order. Separate fuze trials were recommended (with no separation between the blasting cap and the tetryl lead-in) to determine the efficiency of the lead-in.
