Abstract : The effects of magnetic interaction and isotopic shift on the hyperfine structure of atomic spectra were investigated for additional clues to the structure of nuclei. O enriched with O18 was employed to examine the isotopic structure in 20 atomic lines between 2000 and 10,000A. Sharp interferometric patterns were photographed by the use of an electrodeless discharge in a quartz tube which contained an O-He mixture. Approximately 0.5 mm of O in 5 mm of He was necessary for optimum brightness of the atomic spectrum. He and O at 5876 and 6158, respectively, gave an orange color and appeared equally bright when the best mixture was obtained. Silvered interferometer plates were used for measurements in the visible and infrared; aluminized plates were used for the ultraviolet regions. Eastman O plates were used in the violet and ultraviolet regions; in the near infrared region hypersensitized Eastman N plates were employed. A new fine structure was discovered in the lines (8446, 4368, and 2884) during the isotope shift study in the O isotope system. the parameters for 3s and 3p levels are compared for O and N (0.018 and 0.068 cm-1; 0.046 and 0 cm-1, respectively). Theoretical discussions are given for nuclear mass effect, normal mass effect, specific effect perturbation, use of the sum rule, and 1-electron matrix elements. A diagram of the apparatus used is included along with interferometric patterns, isotope structures, and tables of isotope shift and transition data.
