Abstract : Progress is reported on the following projects: (1) the work functions of Li, Cu, Ge, Cd, polycrystalline Au, and Au (100); (2) a direct comparison of the Kelvin and electron-beam methods of contact-potential measurement; (3) the effect of O on the work function of Ba; (4) determination of potential distributions and electron trajectories near patchy surfaces; and (5) the average work function of polycrystalline W. The investigation of the work function of Li is described in Phys. Rev. 75: 1205-1207, 1949; that for Cu, in Phys. Rev. 76: 388-390, 1949. The comparison of the Kelvin and electron beam methods of contact potential measurement is presented in Phys. Rev. 88: 655-658, 1952.
