Abstract : Tests were conducted to determine the adequacy of the Sparrow I fuze booster assembly and to obtain fragment velocities of simulated war heads with undersized and oversized boosters. The standard is a 1.25-in.-diam by 2.00-in.- long, 70-g tetryl fuze booster. The undersized boosters were 1.25 in. long with a 1.25-in. diameter and contained 44 g of tetryl, while the oversized boosters were 2.50 in. long with a 1.25-in. diameter and contained 88 g of tetryl. The test results indicated that the undersized boosters were of sufficient size to produce a high-order detonation in the Sparrow I war head. The oversized booster, with one 0.062-in.-thick steel conduit sleeve omitted, did not increase the fragment velocities of the simulated war heads. The standard was considered adequate for producing a high-order detonation in the Sparrow 1 war head.
