Abstract : A detailed description is given of the Transonic Range, an enclosed free-flight range. The capabilities of this facility are: (1) it allows the testing of full-scale projectiles up to 8 in. in diam; (2) the data obtained at the range give a history of the motion of these projectiles and permit study of their aerodynamic properties in free flight; and (3) the flow pattern about the projectile is clearly recorded for aerodynamic consideration. Incorporated with the range facilities is a 1000-yd target to make the study of dispersion possible through a close study of initial conditions and results on the target. The different types of instrumentation required for special records are discussed. Methods for reducing the raw range data into final aerodynamic coefficients are described, and accuracies are indicated.
