Abstract : The T120 is to be a double-bodied projectile designed to overcome the serious effect of spin on the penetration of shaped charges. The projectile is to consist of a rotating stabilizing section and a slowly rotating charge- carrying section. Investigations were made to obtain bearings and lubricants having sufficiently low frictions and high load-carrying capacities to minimize the spin-rate build-up of the charge section. Test projectiles were fired from a T19 rifle modified to have a 500-cu in. chamber. Static load-torque behavior tests of DRA 215-218 flat step bearings coated with Foscoat and with and without Molykote showed superior performance for thinly coated bearings; noimprovement in performance was noted by the addition of the Molykote. Spherical pivot bearings gavesuperior performances to flat pivot bearings; the spin rates were decreased by increasing the bearig hardness. Messinger DRC 389 ball bearings were superior to Nice no. 715 bearings; failures of the latter confirmed the necessity of well-made and strong bearings.
