Abstract : The study of a hypothetical design to fly at M = 1.8, 40,000 ft , and CL = 0.1 shows that the longitudinal biquadratic splits very sharply into 2 quadratics. The characteristics of the longitudinal disturbed motion are (1) a well-damped oscillation of quite short period and (2) a phugoid oscillation of nearly zero damping a long period. The leading dimensions and quantities of the aircraft are given. The application of this analysis to a smaller design, such as a guided missile, is expected to result in a period possibly less than 0.5 sec for the rapid oscillation.
