Abstract : Kinematical expressions for the rate of propagation of isotachs and points or lines of maximum or minimum speed were developed to aid in the prediction of the field of wind speed for the construction of jet-speed prognoses. Methods are discussed for evaluating these expressions from synoptic charts. Results of an initial experiment in quantitative forecasting of upper winds at the jet-stream level indicated that the procedure developed was promising.
