Abstract : Tests were conducted of high-capacity (HC) and VT (FCL) projectiles loaded with Explosive D and Composition A-3, respectively. Space-distribution data were obtained in a 30-ft-radius semicircle of 0.125-in.-thick mild-steel plates 5 ft high. A total of 752 and 1217 hits were recorded for the HC and VT (FCL) projectiles, respectively; the velocities in the 80 deg to 110 deg zone were 3400 and 4080 fps, respectively. Fragment-mass-distribution tests were conducted in a sawdust-filled box. The HC and VT (FCL) projectiles gave 1218 and 2113 fragments, respectively, with weights between 5/8 and 350 g. The mean fragment masses for the HC and VT (FCL) projectiles were computed from a best fit to the Mott law to be 11.8 and 5.78 g, respectively.
