Abstract : Underwater sound recordings were made of Narragansett Bay, Bermuda, and Bahama funa. The sound production of marine fishes was more general the expected, although the greater percentage produced sound only in response to definite stimuli. Crustacean sounds were obtained continuously in the Bahama and Florida Key coastal waters. Sounds similar to those of the shallow-water species of the grouper type (Epinephelus) occurred at depths of 400 m. Motion picture records will be synchronized with sound records in order to study the fish in the act of noise-making.
