Abstract : Detonation tests were conducted to determine the fragmentation and velocity characteristics of 12-in. Mk 17 and 14-in. Mk 19 high-capacity projectiles loaded with explosive D. The 12-in. projectile produced about 35% more 2.5 - to 640-g fragments and considerably fewer fragments weighing over 640 g in the 60 deg to 120 deg polar angle than the 14-in. projectile. About 85% of the fragment weights of the projectiles was expelled in the 60 deg to 120 deg zone. The 12-and 14-in. projectiles produced average median beam-spray fragment velocities of 2140 and 2210 fps, respectively.
